Lower Manhattan: The Dutch & English Days

Do you know how New York got its name? Do you know what it was called before New York? Some of New York Cities richest history is almost forgotten. It has been said that the present moment in New York City is so powerful that's its past is often ignored. This tour will explore the old Dutch colony that was established in 1624, why they came, who were the major players, their relationship with the natives, how it was taken by the English in 1664, and how they lost it in one of the greatest revolutions in history. Although New York initially decided to remain neutral during the American Revolution, some of the most symbolic moments and important battles took place here, New York City even became this countries first capital where our Bill of Rights was written and congress sat for its first sessions as a shaky but unified nation. Some of the same streets the Dutch and English carved out for us in the 17th and 18th century we still walk today. Lets walk those old streets and reach back into time and try and grasp the magnitude of how this once rugged wilderness has become the epicenter of business, trade and media.
